Measuring your kitchen cabinets can be done without having to immediately remove the cabinets. Measuring the wall dimensions can be done easily in minutes.
Taking the measurements of a kitchen is not difficult but should be done thoroughly. In order to take measurements for new kitchen cabinets, the following items are needed:
- tape measure
- pencil
- planning grid/scratch paper
- calculator
- step stool or ladder
How to Measure Step-by-Step
This step-by-step guide will ensure that homeowners will have the correct measurements for their new kitchen cabinets.

1. Measure Wall Widths
- Measure from wall edge to wall edge
- For windows/doors: measure inside trim to inside trim
- Write all measurements in inches

2. Measure Ceiling Height
- Measure floor to ceiling at corners and center of each wall
- Note soffits (lowered ceiling sections)
- Common ceiling heights: 8ft, 9ft, or 10ft+

3. Mark Center Points
- Measure from wall to center of sink, stove, fridge, windows
- If sink is under a window, mark that clearly

4. Measure Windows
- Measure width and height

5. Measure Vertical Clearances
- Measure from floor to bottom of windows and mark outlets, soffits
- Note anything that might block cabinet installation
